Ray Kuntz
I represent people throughout Montana's 22nd Judicial District.  The Montana values of faith and family, being a good neighbor and working hard are central to my personal and professional life.
Personal Background

I married Lea, the love of my life, in 1991 during law school. Since 1997, we have lived on the East Bench in Fox, between Red Lodge and Roberts, where we raised and homeschooled our two children. My office is in Red Lodge, down the block from my brother Tom’s restaurant, where I eat lunch with him most days.

The Montana values of faith and family, being a good neighbor and working hard are central to my personal and professional life. I have found that public service is one of the best ways to express my dedication to those values. In addition to offering hundreds of hours of pro-bono legal services to people in Stillwater, Carbon and Bighorn counties, including the Roberts Community Foundation and the Tribal Wills Project, I currently serve as volunteer counsel to Rural Fire District 7 and the Red Lodge Ambulance District. I served as president of the Boys and Girls Club of Carbon County for four years and as a coach for the Red Lodge High School debate team. I coached youth baseball and soccer, where my greatest achievement was teaching my players how to keep their shoes tied. I still coach youth hockey. The rest of my free time is spent hunting with friends, backpacking with Lea, and repairing the used diesel equipment that seemed like a pretty good deal when I bought it.

Professional Background

I served as Justice of the Peace Pro-Tem for Carbon County from 2003 to 2010, setting bail and conditions of release, handling pre-trial hearings and issuing orders of protection.  I serve as City Attorney for the Town of Bridger, and represent Carbon and Stillwater Counties on civil matters.

I received my law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1991. I have practiced law for 32 years. In that time, I have handled most of the kinds of cases that come before the District Courts.  I am admitted to the state and federal courts of Montana, New York and New Hampshire and the Supreme Court of the United States.

I have represented local businesses and families in Carbon, Stillwater and Big Horn Counties, winning civil and criminal cases in both the Montana District and Supreme Courts. I am admitted to the United States Supreme Court, the Second, Ninth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeal, and the federal District Courts of Montana.  I have served as a mediator in numerous civil cases, helping both sides to resolve their differences before trial. In addition, I was appointed by Chief Justice McGrath to serve on the Montana Public Defender commission for a term in 2010.
